module 10

The article “A Logic Named Joe” we learn that this author had a very open mind about the possibilities of the future. On most accounts in his article they prove to be true or close to true. He predicted that the logic's, would be able to provide visual phone. He said that you could search the weather and sports. Which is things we can do today and from any location. We are able to take that technology anywhere. Luckily for the main character the logic's had to run in the home.
The only things I think that are little off, is that he thought that all of the information would be stored in buildings with all the facts. How else would you describe the search engines we have now to someone in the 1940’s. It is also interesting that he thought if you could control it how useful it would be. But we basically have. Anything you want to know you can always look it up on Google, or watch a video on YouTube and learn how to do just about anything.
It would be crazy what would happen to the world if all that kind of information was released in today’s world on how to rob banks and every persons information was public information. I wonder how long the world would really last. If at the touch of the button you could find how to commit any crime you wanted and had a full proof plan that every move had to calculated to perfection and there was no way of you getting caught.
We see why it is important to limit what people have access to on the web. If people could just search how to murder people and get away with it we have a big problem. The other problem is the part when the author says that the logic is controlling everything. There is no way of know what information is going out to any person who asks for it. There is no filter and no accountability for what anyone was asking for.
The articles shows a very good use of the networking though. The ability for one logic to send information to the other or even in controlling what goes to one logic from another logic. I know that today there are software programs where you can give the presentation on the computer in front of people and show them how to do things from another computer.
Isn’t it amazing how quickly everything gets thrown in chaos when all the people had the ability to get information on their neighbors? The sad thing is I think that’s how it would really happen. People would be so worried about everyone finding out there personal information that they would be paranoid enough to go and dig into neighbors info. What does that say about us as a society? We aren’t ready for all of that information to be common knowledge.

Module 9

In the reading this week I learned that now that all the components are in place, how companies maximize the ability to outsource and have everything ready within a matter of hours. Parts from all over the world. Ready to be assembled. Also with everything, when we create something to help us to be better and to grow there are always people who want to abuse it and use it for their own gain. There are two sides to every coin. We are able to be so much more productive now but with that those who seek to do damage also are able to be more profitable from it. Also that for your society to last and remain profitable you have to be able to create something. There is only so much oil and once it’s gone you can’t regrow it or plant it.
The making of a DELL computer all begins with either a call or an order from online. Every two hours and e-mail with these orders is sent out to all the collaborating companies who build the parts of the computers. These parts are expected to be delivered in ninety minutes. DELL tracks every part every second so they can keep track of everything. The parts are then delivered from suppliers, and uploaded by DELL. The bar codes are registered, and put in protective bins for safety. So all of this could happen in as little as ninety minutes and as long as three and a half hours. Within that first couple hours everything has already been ordered and delivered. Once everything is there assembly can start. Where do these parts come from though? The parts come from all over the world two of the exact same parts could come from complete opposite sides of the world. DELL has to make sure that if something happens to a distributor they don’t lose out on the business so they order from different companies to make sure they are able to maintain customer service, and make a profit.
With all of the good that globalization does, and all that it can bring about. There are always those who are looking for personal gain from something that was designed to be a tool. Al-Qaeda, is able to do more recruiting, transfer more information. Just as we can call a friend across the world. They are able to set up plans, or “pull the trigger” from anywhere in the world they want. They are able to recruit more people of all ages as they grow. They can bring people in from anywhere in the world to do what they wish. Just like DELL ordering the parts for the computers al-qaeda can bring in people from anywhere to accomplish their plans.
The curse of oil allows the government of which ever group of people drilling and collecting the oil to go unchecked. Just like with anything else. If the people are working and getting money then they don’t see the need to change. The people aren’t taxed, but they also don’t have much say in what happens politically. The oil isn’t a permanent resource that you can just plant and regrow. Once the oil is gone it’s gone and if you can’t find another place to tap you are looking at all those people who are used to that income no longer have it. When the people under the leaders aren’t happy, usually that leads to a revolution. So the problem is while you have an income now. What are you going to do when it runs out? The only skills you have are digging for oil which is no longer there. You have to produce something from resources that you have. Something you can make and turn into profit.

Module 8

Computers are everywhere today. Computers are how people stay in contact, between work, personal, schools or just for entertainment. Would computers be as useful without the connectivity of the internet and the ability to connect that they allow. Specifically speaking though how have computers helped in my education process? Well if we start from the very beginning you use computers to research schools, computers are used to register for school, to apply for classes, to do homework, to find out what materials you use in the class. And almost everything in school requires you to have a computer, but not just a computer but to be connected to your classes, to submit assignments.
Even before you graduate from high school the college process is beginning. You are researching what college you want to go into you are researching what classes to take, what major to declare. That can all be done online. Through the internet you are able to search the schools, even if they are around the world. The access computers give you would take day’s maybe weeks to get done without the internet. I was able to choose between colleges with my computer.
When it came time to apply to the college of my choice I was able to apply and get accepted all from the comfort of my own house, from my computer. From there I was able to apply for classes and research majors. I was able to look at activities going on around campus and get connected with other students. I learned about what to expect at Weber State University.
Once school I was able to submit assignments, and even take classes from my computer. While in classes I can easily take notes from my computer or record a lecture. I can research the work we are doing in class for a deeper purpose. Computers themselves are very useful, It allows those of us who don’t have the most artist hand in writing to break that barrier and submit nice and organized work.
Another really appealing fact about computers is you are able to take them with you. We have advanced in technology that we are able to pick up all our work and carry it with us where ever we go. We are able to stay in contact as though we were in the classroom. It would be hard to imagine what college would be like before the capability to type a paper to have to hand write it. Instead of being able to search the web for information, having to go to the library and search through dozens of encyclopedias. What use to be several hours of work, can now be done with the push of a few buttons.
Computers play a role in education that is unmatched by anything else ever in history. The ability to complete assignments, to research, to connect. It is amazing how far we have come in technology and difficult to imagine what the future technology holds for students and the world in the future.
It will be interested to see how things change in the future, if instead of researching how to do something yourself if classes will teach you how to contact someone else in another place in the world and have them do some part of the work and learn how to outsource. Have you travel and study how a country builds something better than other countries because of resources readily more available to them, so you understand why it is important why you hire certain companies over other companies based on where they are located in the world. It all starts in the schools and with the students.
